⚡Lightning Lanes: The Best Way to Approach Them
Blog Post Author: Jacob Ward
This blog post will cover the Lightning Lane system at Walt Disney World, and how guests can effectively use it to maximize their time in the parks. More time riding, and less time stressing!
Many guests don't want to spend chunks of their day just waiting in long lines. Understanding the Lightning Lane system allows you to get even more done, and let's you make even better memories on vacation.
When you picture a Disney vacation, one thing you may imagine is spending hours of your precious time waiting in lines for attractions. After all, long waits are a common expectation when visiting the home of Mickey. Then you start to worry that you won't be able to experience much on this magical trip of yours. Fortunately, as a Disney expert, I can confidently tell you that it doesn't have to be that way!
What is Lightning Lane?
At the Walt Disney World Resort, there is a system available to guests that allows them to greatly reduce the amount of time spent in line for attractions. This system is known as Lightning Lane, and understanding how this works is one of the best ways to maximize your time in the parks. And we have all the tips and advice on how to do just that! But, let's start with some general information about what this system is.
The Lightning Lane system is a paid service offered by Disney that allows guests to bypass the standard queue of participating attractions. Instead, guests get placed into an expedited queue with a much shorter wait. While you may hear this described as “skipping the line,” that is only true to a certain extent. Lightning Lanes may not always let you walk right onto an attraction, but it will significantly reduce your wait. After paying for the service, Lightning Lanes can be booked through the My Disney Experience app where you select an available time to visit the attraction. When that time arrives, simply walk up to the Lightning Lane queue, tap your MagicBand or room key, and have a good time! Once an attraction is used, you can book another one, pending availability. Rinse and repeat throughout your park day!
This System is Divided into 3 tiers:
Lightning Lane Multi Pass is the “standard” tier that most guests utilize when purchasing the service. With Multi Pass, guests can book up to three attractions to experience prior to their arrival. Attractions in each park are divided into two tiers (except for Animal Kingdom which has no tiers). Your “A Tier” attractions are considered to be the headliners, the attractions that normally command the highest wait times and are the most in-demand.
The “B Tier” attractions are ones that tend to complement your park day as fun offerings in-between the heavy hitters of the A Tier. You may book one Tier A attraction and two Tier B attractions, giving you a balanced and efficient start to your day. You purchase Multi Pass for a specific park, but if you have park hopper tickets, you can book Lightning Lanes in other parks once you use your first one.
Lightning Lane Single Pass can be seen as a sort of “additional” tier, where one-time access to select attractions is purchased a la carte. Each park has one attraction (with Magic Kingdom being the exception with two attractions) within the Single Pass tier. These Single Pass attractions are some of the most popular and advanced attractions in their respective parks, even beyond the Tier A attractions with Multi Pass. Single Pass is an additional cost on top of Multi Pass, but you do not need to purchase Multi Pass to use Single Pass.
If you are in a splurging mood and have the budget for it, you could spring for Lightning Lane Premier Pass. With the purchase of this tier, you have one-time access to all Lightning Lane eligible attractions in your chosen park, including Single Pass attractions. You do not need to schedule a return time for the attractions; you just go to the Lightning Lane queue for whatever attraction you wish to do and have fun! It is the simplest of all the tiers, but it comes at a very premium price tag. Depending on the park and the day, Premier Pass will run your family $200 - $400+ per person, per day. Unlike Multi Pass which works in multiple parks if you have a park hopper ticket, Premier Pass only works in your chosen park, even if you have a park hopper ticket. By comparison, Multi Pass will run you between $20 - $40 per person per day, depending on the park and the day. That is quite a substantial cost difference on a trip that you are already paying a good amount of money on. Using Multi Pass efficiently can ensure you have a productive and wonderful experience in the parks.
How to Book Lightning Lanes:
The first step to starting off on the right foot with the Lightning Lane system is by logging onto your My Disney Experience app as close to 7am EST as possible once you are seven days prior to your check in day. If you are booked at a Disney World resort for your vacation, this is the best way to give you the prime options for ride availability and return times. If you are not staying at a Disney resort, then you are able to purchase and book Lightning Lane three days in advance of your arrival to the parks. Keep in mind that all Disney World bookings operate on Eastern Time. Therefore if you are not in that zone, you have to work out the proper time in your zone. For example, I live in the Central time zone, so for me, 7am EST is 6am CST.
What to Book First:
Start with purchasing Multi Pass for each day of your trip. As of this writing, you have to purchase one day at a time, but you can purchase and book for your entire trip. Have your park plan firmed up prior to purchasing because once purchased, you are locked into your chosen park for a particular day. For example, if you purchase Multi Pass for Hollywood Studios, your Multi Pass is locked into Hollywood Studios. If you pivot and decide to visit Magic Kingdom, you will have to purchase Multi Pass again for that park. If you have a park hopper ticket, you can start in Hollywood Studios, then book Lightning Lanes in Magic Kingdom for later in the day. But once purchased for a specific park, you cannot change that park. After you have your Multi Pass bookings secured, move on to booking any Single Pass attractions you may want. Keep in mind, you do not need to have Multi Pass purchased in order to purchase Single Pass.
Maximizing your LL Bookings:
When booking Lightning Lanes (either for Multi or Single Pass), you will need to schedule a “return window” for your access to the attraction. This will be a blocked hour of time for you to scan into the attraction. Try to schedule your first Lightning Lane as close to park opening as you can to start maximizing your time as soon as you enter. Once you use a Lightning Lane, go back into your app as quickly as you can to book your next one. For an additional time hack, you can scan into your Lightning Lane booking five minutes ahead of your window opening. Over the course of a day, these minutes can add up! Remember, Multi Pass allows you to book Lightning Lanes all day long, not just your initial three! Consistently booking another attraction after experiencing one keeps the day flowing and ensures you always have something coming up. If there is an attraction you want, but is not available, book something else instead. It's better to have a Lightning Lane booked than holding out to book a different one that may not be available at all. You are able to modify bookings, so you can check back in the app and refresh availability often. People adjust their plans all the time, so you'll never know what you'll find!
Why I Recommend Lightning Lane:
The Lightning Lane system is ideal for guests looking to maximize their day with minimal waits. The system can be learned quickly, and is truly the best way to make sure you get plenty of rides in on your Disney trip. It does come at an extra cost, and that cost varies depending on the day, season, and park in which you're visiting. But the extra cost is more than worth it. The extra time you get back by eliminating a ton of waiting time can be used to fit in another attraction, more breaks, plenty of time for dining and snacking, or more time to explore the parks at a leisurely pace. For me, Lightning Lanes are always a must when I visit Walt Disney World!
