Genie Travel Company's Robert Herman shares his experience aboard Royal Caribbean's newest Icon Class ship during a special pre-inaugural sailing from Málaga, Spain, to Rome, Italy.
A Grateful Invitation
Every so often, a travel experience comes along that reminds us why we love what we do.
In June of this year, Genie Travel Company Owner and CEO Robert Herman and his wife Karen Herman were honored to be invited aboard Royal Caribbean's pre-inaugural sailing of Legend of the Seas, the newest ship in the groundbreaking Icon Class. Sailing from Málaga, Spain to Rome, Italy, the voyage offered a rare opportunity to experience the ship before it officially welcomed guests.
Being part of this sailing was something Robert approached with genuine gratitude.
"It was truly an honor to be invited. Opportunities like this don't come around very often, and we're incredibly thankful to Royal Caribbean, their leadership team, and especially Vicki Freed (Royal Caribbean International’s senior vice president of Sales, Trade Support and Service) for including us."
More than anything, the experience reinforced how exciting it is to help travelers discover new ways to see the world.
The Excitement Starts Immediately
From the moment guests arrived, there was an energy throughout the ship that was impossible to miss.
The crew welcomed everyone with smiles, music filled the air, and there was a genuine feeling that something special was about to happen. Walking through The Pearl, the stunning architectural centerpiece of the ship, created a sense of awe right from the start.
The openness of the space, the natural flow of the design, and the excitement of everyone onboard made a powerful first impression.
"You could feel the pride from the crew and everyone involved. It felt like a celebration."
Bigger Than Expected, Easier Than Imagined
Before boarding, Robert was curious about how Royal Caribbean could improve upon ships like Harmony of the Seas and others he has sailed on.
What impressed him most wasn't just the size—it was how comfortable and easy the ship felt.
Despite carrying thousands of guests and crew members, the ship never felt crowded. Thoughtful design, smart technology, and well-planned neighborhoods helped everything flow naturally.
One small detail stood out immediately: the smart elevator system.
Guests simply choose their destination, and the system directs them to the most efficient elevator to use.
"We hardly waited at all. It's one of those little things that makes a huge difference."
As an engineer, Robert was equally impressed with the innovation behind the Icon Class and Royal Caribbean's continued focus on building more efficient and sustainable ships.
Finding a Favorite Spot
With so much to see onboard, Robert found himself returning again and again to Central Park.
Nestled in the heart of the ship, this open-air neighborhood offers a quieter atmosphere filled with greenery, restaurants, seating areas, and views of the sky above.
While other areas of the ship buzz with excitement and activity, Central Park provides a peaceful place to slow down and relax.
"It was nice having a calm place to sit and enjoy the atmosphere. The balance between excitement and relaxation is something Royal Caribbean has done very well."
For travelers who enjoy quieter surroundings, Central Park-facing staterooms could become a hidden favorite.
A Ship Designed for Families, and Everyone Else
One of Robert's biggest takeaways was how thoughtfully the ship serves different types of travelers.
Whether you're traveling as a couple, with young children, with grandparents, or as a large family group, there truly seems to be a place for everyone.
The neighborhood concept allows family members to enjoy different activities throughout the day while still spending meaningful time together.
Young children can enjoy Surfside and the water attractions. Parents can explore restaurants, nightlife, and entertainment. Grandparents can find quieter spaces to relax.
Then everyone naturally reconnects for dinner, shows, and shared experiences.
"What stood out to me is how easy it is for multiple generations to vacation together."
Staterooms with Real Families in Mind
The accommodations left a strong impression as well.
Robert toured several family-focused staterooms that solve a challenge many larger families of five or six people face when planning a cruise: finding enough room without booking multiple cabins.
Some affordable staterooms can accommodate up to six guests and include private sleeping spaces, multiple televisions, family-friendly layouts, and creative storage solutions.
The split-bathroom design in these larger staterooms was another feature that families are likely to appreciate while getting ready for busy days onboard.
"You can tell a lot of thought went into these spaces. They're designed around how families actually travel."
Entertainment That Exceeded Expectations
As someone who enjoys live theater, Robert arrived with high expectations.
Even so, the entertainment surpassed them.
The onboard production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was a particular highlight.
"I expected it to be enjoyable, but I wasn't expecting to be as impressed as I was."
The quality of the staging, lighting, music, and performances rivaled productions found in major theater cities.
The ice show and Aqua Show were equally memorable, showcasing the incredible talent and technology that have become hallmarks of Royal Caribbean entertainment.
Great Food and Plenty of Choices
During the sailing, Robert spent much of his dining time in the Main Dining Room, where menus changed daily and offered a wide variety of options.
From creative desserts to classic favorites, there was something for everyone.
What stood out most wasn't necessarily one specific meal but the consistency and variety available throughout the ship.
Guests with dietary preferences or special requirements will also find numerous options available.
The Ship Becomes the Destination
One of the most interesting conclusions Robert reached during the sailing was that guests may find themselves just as excited about the ship as the ports it visits.
For travelers who have cruised the Caribbean before, Legend of the Seas offers something unique.
The ship itself becomes part of the adventure.
With incredible entertainment, comfortable accommodations, diverse dining options, family activities, relaxing spaces, and reliable Starlink internet, there is always something to do.
"My wife Karen and I have different interests, but we both thoroughly enjoyed the experience. That's not easy to accomplish on a vacation."
Looking Back
What made this experience truly special wasn't just seeing a beautiful new ship.
It was the opportunity to witness the passion and hard work behind it.
Throughout the voyage, Robert had the chance to learn from Royal Caribbean team members, hear their vision for the future of cruising, and see firsthand the excitement surrounding the launch of Legend of the Seas.
There was a genuine sense that everyone aboard—from crew members to executives to travel professionals—understood they were part of something memorable.
"I left feeling grateful. Grateful for the opportunity, grateful for the people we met, and excited for the travelers who will soon get to experience this ship for themselves."
